Tibet Travel Information

Lhasa  Tickets  &  Permits

Trains from Beijing to Lhasa leave every night at 9.30pm. The above train ticket prices are for a lower berth/bed. Normal ticket booking can be done up to 4 days in advance (advance booking may also be possible). There are fewer tickets sold in Xi*An. For the most chance of getting a ticket we advise that you travel direct from Beijing (or take a normal train to Xi*An then fly to Lhasa).  Please note that we cannot 100% guarantee train tickets, due to the China ticket-issuing system.

Summer / national holiday travel. During the summer / holiday season it is very difficult to obtain sleeper tickets. You should be prepared to pay a large commission fee or take a flight, or take a hard seat on the train. For those who do not know, the main national holiday times in China are: February 7th (7-10 days), May 1st (7 days), October 1st (7 days).  During these times, and even just before and after, we especially cannot provide any guarantee of tickets, and In some cases may stop service altogether. So please plan your trip carefully ;)

Fly to Lhasa instead? A one-way plane ticket from Beijing is around 2560rmb, including tax (from Xi*An it is 1780rmb). Getting flight tickets is much easier than getting train tickets so it is definitely recommended if you have enough money and want to leave on a definite date. If you really want to take the train you might like to consider taking a flight from Beijing to Lhasa and then taking the train on the way back (it*s easier to get the train back into mainland China, and we also have contacts in Lhasa who can help us arrange the tickets for you ;)

If you would like to travel to Lhasa you will need to have a Lhasa TTB/TTP permit.  The permit allows you to enter Lhasa and stay for around 4 to 5 days. We can arrange this permit for 700rmb per person. If you would like to travel outside of the Lhasa area (to places like Mount Everest, Nakqu, Tsedang, Kailash, Shigatse, the Nyingchi prefecture, overland to Nepal etc) you will need to have a PSB ※Alien§ permit. To get the PSB / Alien permit you need to join a tour. We offer some tours both inside and outside of the Lhasa area .

A note on ※Tour Groups§# A tour group can be any number of people. A one-person tour group is also theoretically possible but you must still travel with a guide. Generally, the price of tour packages will depend on how many people are in your group. The more people you have, the more you can share the costs of the guide and car expenses. The best number for traveling outside of Lhasa is probably 4 people or 8 people (one car/jeep can seat 4 travelers, the guide and driver). If you are flexible in terms of which dates you would like to go and which tours you would like to do it will be easier find people to share the tour costs with you.  It is best to stay at the hostel for around a week, which could be enough time to meet some other travelers. We offer some tours both inside and outside of the Lhasa area

Please note that it is probably best to decide on your Tibet travel plans before you go to Lhasa. Are you just going to stay in Lhasa or are you also going to travel outside of Lhasa? On the Lhasa TTB/TTB permit it will state your travel plans. If you only book the TTB/TTP permit in advance (and not the PSB Alien permit) your TTB/TTP permit will just say BEIJING-LHASA and you will not be able to travel outside of Lhasa unless you  spend more time and money in Lhasa to buy *another* TTB/TTP permit saying BEIJING-LHASA-OUTSIDE LHASA.  You will then have to wait around again to process the PSB Alien permit and then wait again for a tour group to form. So it is best to plan ahead!

To process your permits we will need a copy of your main passport page (showing your photo, name, date of birth, country, and passport number etc). We also need a copy of your China visa* page. If you would like to book permits and tickets in advance, you will need to scan and email separate copies of your passport & visa pages to us (please send JPG/JPEG or BITMAP pictures - do not send PDF or Word documents). You should also let us know your occupation and  which date you would like to travel on. The permit will be valid to board the train/plane on that date, and also valid to board the train/plane on the day before and day after. For the most chance of obtaining a ticket you should be prepared to travel on any of the 3 days.

We need *at least* 3 or 4 working days (Monday to Friday) to process Lhasa permits and tickets. We usually start applications every Monday, so it is best to arrive here on a Sunday and be prepared to stay in Beijing for up to a week. We can also process permits and tours for people not staying at the hostel.

If you do not have enough time to spend in Beijing, you can also book permits and tickets in advance by sending money via Western Union (please see below).

*Notice to anyone about to apply for a China visa: Several sites on the internet advise not to write on the visa application form that you would like to go to Tibet, as this may make the visa process longer.

Foreigners living in China & foreign media workers: Sometimes F/Z visa holders may have problems obtaining a permit so please apply with us as early as possible. If you are a foreign diplomat/official, embassy worker or journalist you will almost certainly have a problem applying for a normal TTB/TTP permit. Please consult your employers/embassy first to avoid disappointment. If you are a teacher or student in China we will also need a copy of your student/work book/card/ID.

Please note: Just like all other online ticket-booking companies, we cannot 100% guarantee to obtain tickets, due to China*s train ticket system. If for some reason we cannot obtain tickets we will of course refund your money in full (excluding commission charges, if used). Sometimes permits will be more difficult to obtain, depending on the government*s current regulations, and our also our permit agents.
